Dice Roll

Every decision you make in life is a dice roll.

1 — a missed train because you decided that talking to this person was gonna be worthwhile but it wasn’t

6 — an event you decided to attend led you to meeting your cofounder

Every day, we’re faced with countless decisions that we can make—dice rolls that we can throw. You’re never going to know whether your next toss is a 1, or even a 6. And that’s the beauty of it. The value of your dice roll will only reveal itself once you have tossed it.

And the result won’t be static either.

Parts of a conversation you once thought was fruitless resurfacing at an crucial moment. A class you once audited for fun expanding your perspectives. A dice roll you once viewed as a 1 now suddenly a 6.

A blessing in disguise.

There’s not one way you can force the dice to always roll a 6. It’s impossible to optimize every decision you make to your benefit, to a guaranteed net-gain.

But there are ways to increase the probabilities, to ‘be luckier.’

  • Make an educated assessment on a decision
  • Expose yourself to occasions that bring many dices
  • Be bold

The people who take advantage of these dices, more often than not, end up in places they otherwise wouldn’t have had they simply did what they were comfortable with doing. And quite frankly, there are plenty of good dices in the world not tossed, some still waiting to be found.

So if you’re someone who’s capable but don’t understand how some people are just always in the right place at the right time, I’d end with this note:

Say yes to more things, even if it’s to your intrusive thoughts.

Because you never know when you’ll roll a 6, but you’ll never find out unless you throw the dice.
